From workout.lol to workout.cool: Building the open-source fitness platform the community deserves.

I was the main contributor to workout.lol, an open-source fitness app that gained significant traction with 1.4k GitHub stars, 95 forks, and ~20K monthly visits. Despite its success, the project was eventually sold due to video licensing hurdles.

The new owner stopped maintaining it, leaving the community with a broken tool. Over 9 months, I sent 15 emails trying to save it – no replies. Feature requests and issues were ignored.

I couldn't just let it die. So I built Workout.cool from scratch with the same open-source spirit, but with better architecture, long-term vision, more features, and no license problems.

I'm not doing this for money. I'm doing it because I believe in STUPIDS simple (fitness) tools, and I've been passionate about strength training for 15+ years. Together, we can build the open-source fitness platform we all wanted.

I've been passionate about strength training for over 15 years, and I believe in building open-source tools and freedom in general. When workout.lol was abandoned despite its success, I couldn't just let the community down. That's why I rebuilt it from scratch as Workout.cool designed to last.

Now, let me be completely honest with you: I'm not doing this for money. BUT while you are working out for free, I have to pay the server bills, the mail providers and all the infrastructure that keeps this "labor of love" running.

At the beginning, we were running on donations. But as you can expect, the donations weren't enough to cover the costs. So I had to find a way to make it sustainable. That's why we are now open-core. The main features and the self-hosting option will always be 100% free, but we will have a premium version with additional features for those who want to support the mission.
